Zakado lifts the Zambian Flag high in Egypt (Part 1)
Chansa Lukwesa Kantanta popularly known as Scart is Zambia’s most celebrated cartoonist owing to the famous and popular cartoon known as Zakado. It would interest you to know that Scart is a self taught cartoonist and only has two years in this closed market or industry. We describe it as a closed industry because the number of participants is extremely minimal and it takes special skill to enter it and excel.
Born and Bred on the copper belt, Chansa understands the Province’s culture which he describes as fascinating and somewhat deceiving. It’s out of this culture that his brilliant brains bore the characters in the Zakado cartoon. Just like many entrepreneurs, the starting was not as smooth as many people would imagine. It all started in 2009 at Chiwempala Market where he had set up a studio and a business centre offering printing, photocopying and secretarial services. Of course, like every other businesses, he had many challenges but could not pull through after one major setback. The most dependable and valuable asset, the computer got struck by lightning. This changed everything about him. In an effort to make ends meet, Chansa had to take up various jobs. It’s in search of a better life that he found himself working at Bravo Records, a music studio owned by Afunika. He took up a role of a camera man and cinematographer as those were the roles required to cover afunika’s shows and music videos. The stay was rather a little below what he longed for, he decided to search for greener pastures at Bishop Kazhila’s church taking a similar role as at Bravo records. Because of his skills on the camera and video editing, the son to Bishop Kazhila, Gabriel poached him to work for his media company called Explosion. Scart’s dream was bigger than working under someone; he therefore decided to go solo running his own company as a supplier to the mines, this seemed a little more profitable but it had its own demands and challenges which he could not cope up with. While trying all these things, he kept perfecting his camera and cinematography skills. He taught himself various computer programming languages through youtube and various websites. His programming skills saw him partner up with an American company called Zamsoft whose main line of business was that of building computer Applications (Apps). The company heavily depended on funding. This went on for a little while until funding ceased which resulted into closure of the company and saw Scart packing hence turning to the old dream of being a sole proprietor.
Zakado came on the scene 2 years ago after the originator, scart decided to concentrate more on creating cartoons. He felt he needed to express the copperbelt culture as many people find it quite intriguing and it is surrounded by many myths. Copperbelt people are generally known to be pompous, nescient and savagery, well this is a myth and it is such kind of beliefs that Zakado wants to kill. He however admits that indeed Copper belt people appear pompous and savagery, but that’s just a face they put up to hide their fears, it is a clever way to protect themselves. Whatever the case Copper belt people are goal getters and hard working as evidenced by the amount of wealth they flaunt. One may not be academically well abreast but would be so gifted in conducting businesses to successful levels so much that under them would be a long span of intellectuals. Zakado the cartoon is depicting this culture and has been overwhelmingly well received and watched throughout the country on Zakado Facebook page and televised live on Southern Classic Media face book page. You can like Southern Classic Media page to ensure you don’t miss Zakado the Cartoon live broadcast every Thursday to Sunday at 20:00 hrs. Southern Classic is a media organization which has formed up an alliance with Zakado and bafana media to air Zakado the cartoon during its live broadcasts.
During an exclusive interview with Bafana Media, Scart disclosed that the power of Zakado is not really about the carton but the culture displayed which is more realistic and the captivating Koppala language. Chansa has had to work hard to be what and where he is now, out of all the things he ever did on earth, only the God given talent and his passion has worked out to his satisfaction. In this vein he urged the youths to follow their passion, embrace, master the art of their talents and convert them into money making ventures. “ It’s not always about completing school then look for a Job, try out your talent and put in your best to understand it then apply some business techniques to make money” he advised. Chansa who has studied Human Resource and Business Management from ZIPSIP encourages the young ones to do school quite alright but must remember to discover who they are and their capabilities.
Indeed talent pays off. Much as he appreciates the companies he passed through before he eventually went solo, he feels so free working for himself. “I am always grateful to all the people who gave me a chance to work for them, the likes of Afunika of Bravo Records, Bishop Kazhila, Gabriel Kazhila and many more, I learnt a lot during the time I worked under them and I wouldn’t be where I am without every person I have encountered in the journey of my life” added the humble spoken Chansa.
In April 2019 Chansa went to Egypt participate in a Cartoon exhibition Festival. We are delighted to mention that out of 48 cartoon projects submitted by different cartoonists from different countries, Zakado was among the top 8. This encouraged Chansa to work even extra hard and aims to cross many boarders out of cartoon creation. Many doors have since opened after the Egypt festival as he has made more connections with people from different countries. Bafana Media is proud of Scart, our very own, born out of our own soil. Let’s show more love and support by liking Zakado facebook page. You can also like our facebook pages, Southern Classic Media and Bafana Media.
